iMac M3 Trash folder in Mail not sorting most recent on top

I'm having problems locating deleted emails in Mail on a new M3 iMac running Sonoma 14.3.1. Although my sort instructions for all my email folders are by date, with most recent on top, the trash folder won't show the deleted emails in this order. To locate today's deleted emails, I had to enter today's date in the search box. The only deleted emails that show on top are all from one sender, organized by date with most recent on top.

All deleted emails seem to be in the trash folder if I can construct the proper search term, I just can't get to them without a search command.

I'm using POP with an outlook.com server. The only deleted emails that appear there are ones I delete when I go directly to the server using my iPad.

How do I fix this? Thank you in advance for any input you can provide.

iMac 24″, macOS 14.3
