My iPad pro was just upgraded to 17.4 last night. After the upgrade, the display cannot be expanded to an external display. It can be expanded before the upgrade. Turning off the "mirror display" in "display and brightness" - "arrangement" has no effect.
The extended desktop functionality has changed in iPadOS 17.4.
Be aware that for Stage Manager to be available for an external monitor, you must connect both an external Keyboard (Bluetooth or wired) and a Mouse or supported Trackpad before connecting to the external monitor.
Unless both a Keyboard and Mouse/Trackpad are detected, Stage Manager for the external monitor is disabled - and only screen mirroring will be available regardless of iPad settings.
