Some coffee spilled on my laptop keyboard ( MacBook Pro 13 inch 2022). The "A" key stopped working for about a day or so and started working again. Now my equals key turns on caps lock, m or z it comes up as "mz", similarly with q and u ( qu ) and 1 and 7 ( 17 ). Is this an issue caused by the spill, something else completely, or a software issue?

No, definitely a hardware issue. Coffee itself, will leave residue that can be both physically or electrically damaging. If you add milk, creme, or sugar, the situation just gets worse.
I strongly recommend that you stop using your laptop. Keep it powered off. Then make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them take a look and provide you with your options.
FWIW. I had a small water-only spill on my 2020 MacBook Pro about 3 months after I got it. Following my own advice, I quickly powered off the laptop and got with Apple. The result was that there was enough water that entered into the laptop to have the the Mac's touch pad, logic board, and display to have to be replaced.
Do NOT be fooled to trying to use a hair dryer, rice, etc. to "fix" the issue with your Mac. There is significant residue inside your Mac from the coffee spill that it really needs to be examined.
