Can I Airplay to an Apple TV Without Wifi

I am a computer tech at a school. My teachers primarily use 2017 Intel MacBook Airs (we will be upgrading them soon). Almost every room has an Apple TV that they airplay to. I am trying to understand the difference between Screen Sharing, AirPlaying, and Peer to Peer(ing). lol

I know they are all basically the same thing but my question is....can they airplay their computers to their Apple TVs without the Apple TV being on the internet? I have problems with laggy airplay connections almost every day. I understand this could be a network port issue ....but also could be due to my lack of understanding how peer to peer connections work. Any insight would be AMAZING.

Thanks!!!

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.4

The devices don't have to be connected to the internet but they do need to be connected to the same WiFi network.

I know it used to be possible to create an ad hoc network using a Mac but it's been at least a decade since I've done that.

That’s not correct, my iMac on Ethernet AirPlays without issue.

Thank you for the correction. I haven't connected a computer to an ethernet cable in at least a decade and I tend to forget about it.

So, perhaps I should modify my answer to read "The devices don't have to be connected to the internet but they do need to be connected to the same network."
