Manually configuring MBP Mail app.

Can't get Yahoo to come online on MBP 2019 running Sonoma 14.4. I know the problem relates to migrating from cox mail to yahoo. Cox let's me keep my cox.net email address so in configuring Mail, IMAP wants to be set as IMAP.mail.cox.net instead of IMAP.mail.yahoo.com. How do I get into SONOMA 14.2 and configure the setting manually?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.4

Go into your Yahoo account and go to security and generate an app password for 'Mail' - save that password.
When adding an email account to Mail on the MacBook Pro, use the option 'Other' to add the account, enter your email and 'fake password' so that it will fail, then edit the imap & smtp servers to be Yahoo instead. Now use that one time app password, it will authenticate to your Yahoo mail account and now you have the correct imap & smtp servers. You might have to change the description of your account from Cox to Yahoo by going to 'settings' under mail and changing the description under 'account information'. Yahoo walked me through this and it finally worked.

I just finished talking to Yahoo tech support via Cox as part of this transition of cox.net to Yahoo. This is what was done.

There is no option in Mail>Settings>Accounts>Server Settings for changing the IMAP host name, only the outgoing SMTP name can be edited. I am using Mail Version 16.0 (3774.500.171.1.1). Thanks for your help.

Seems odd— you can remove the account and add it back in— choose "Other" maybe more options will present.

Possibly Yahoo support or Cox support would be good resource.

other issues—

no resolve—delete account from >System Settings>internet accounts.

then with   Safari.app>Settings>Advanced     turned off under Privacy> “Use advanced..”

I know if there are issues choosing POP or IMAP you can trick Mail into presenting more options by putting in a bogus email address that does not resolve.... You can make corrections after more options will present.

Try calling Cox, they will transfer you to Yahoo to try to resolve the issue. As I had mentioned, I could not get to my Yahoo account using the email and new password, I had to create an Yahoo app password from the Yahoo website under the security tab under account info and use that app password when trying to add the Yahoo account in the MBP Mail app. That's the only option that will allow you to change the imap server as well as the smtp server in the MBP Mail app.

You make changes in Mail>Settings>Accounts>Server Settings

make change to the "Host name" for your incoming mail server IMAP...

If SMTP need the same, change the Host name there as well.

I really appreciate your help. I’ve checked the Cox link and didn’t get any help from Cox. I was able to get to the setup page, perhaps through spoofing the app. While I was able to input the Yahoo IMAP and SMTP host name settings, when trying to save my work I get a message that the settings can’t be verified. I’ve checked userid, passwords, etc numerous times.

At this point I am pretty much convinced that the userid, @cox.net, is causing Mail to try to verify my userid with Cox instead of Yahoo. Of course my password is associated with Yahoo.

I confirmed this earlier my checking the log for connection doctor. I could get a connection to the Yahoo SMTP server, but the log showed a failure to connect to the Cox IMAP server.

Again, I appreciate your help and I will resume my task tomorrow. Thanks.
