How do I change my default map to Google Maps?

I'm on an iphone 13 pro max and the latest software. I use Google for everything so I want Google Maps to open when I click an address. I've read that it's possible to change the default via the GMail app but that isn't working. Frankly, this switch to ios has not been great between my phone not playing well with my PC, the constant automatic changing of apps and screen layout with every update, the horrid app store relative to the Google app store (why is EVERYthing subscription-based???) and of course the lack of being able to customize much of anything.

Please tell me I can at least use the map app that I want to use. If that's not the case, anyone want a smoking deal on a near mint iphone?

There is no way to change the default map to Google. You can certainly download the Google Map app and use it on your iPhone. But when you use Maps, you'll be using Apple Maps, which I find is actually a good map app to use, personally. I use Apple Maps, Google Maps and Wayze on my iPhone. You can choose what you prefer to use, but you can't make one of them default.
