Battery Draining on my iPhone after recent iOS update

Well, i was waiting for a big update to solve the battery drain issue from iOS 17.4, but the new update x.x.1 make it worse, now my battery take only 5 hours on screen. On iOS 16 it was so different, my phone had something about 10 hours of screen, now its less than half.

i have an iPhone 12

I have finally found the reason for overheating and possibly also for unacceptable battery drain under 17.4.1 for my case (iPhone 13 Pro, 17.4.1). The culprit is "Require Attention for Face ID", "Attention-Aware Features" or perhaps both.

I have noticed that overheating always coincides with browsing time, comes from a specific spot in the back of the phone (roughly in the middle) and is not depending on the brightness level, on the connection type (wireless, LTE or 5G) or on the app (different web browsers, different news apps) in use.

One consequence of overheating was that, under 17.4.1, I reached max. 4-5 hours of browsing time (instead of about 10 hours) from a 100% charge and with 92% battery health (down from 98% since I have installed 17.4.1!)

Yesterday evening I came to the idea that the overheating might be caused by the iPhone continuously checking for attention before dimming the display ("Auto-Lock" is set to 30 seconds) because during screen-off times I had neither overheating nor significant battery drain.

As it turns out, switching off "Require Attention for Face ID" and "Attention-Aware Features" has completely solved the overheating problem.

Battery life also seems to be back to normal levels but I will have to check this through a few days of regular usage.

Hope this helps!

Yes, you are right. After significant iOS updates, especially when there are a lot of changes, it’s common for users to experience increased battery drain. This can happen due to several reasons, such as the system indexing new files, apps updating in the background to become compatible with the new OS, and new features that may use more power. Additionally, if there are bugs in the update, they can also cause the battery to drain more quickly. However, there are several settings you can adjust to help reduce battery drain, some are:

  • Force restart your iPhone to clear temporary glitches.
  • Disable Bluetooth when not in use, as it can consume battery life.
  • Update all apps to ensure they are optimized for the new iOS version.
  • Disable Siri and search settings as well as journaling suggestions and the app privacy report, which run in the background and can drain the battery.

For a comprehensive guide with step-by-step instructions on how to adjust these settings and more, you can refer to this helpful article: How to Stop Battery Draining on iPhone After a Recent IOS Update. By following the tips mentioned there, I hope the battery drainage on your device will be significantly reduced

After one day of usage I can confirm that battery life is back to normal levels: about 10% drop in one hour screen-on browsing.

This means about 10 hours browsing time at modest screen brightness from a full charge, which is more or less what I was getting before "upgrading" to 17.4 (17.4.1) with my iPhone 13 Pro (now at at 92% battery health).

With "Require Attention for Face ID" and "Attention-Aware Features" ON, I get instead more than 20% drop per hour of browsing under otherwise the same conditions (connection, position, screen brightness, apps used, etc.)

Yea on my 13 Pro I went from 8-9 hours (100% of battery used) to now 100% of battery is gone with around 5 hours give or take of Screen on time.

After switching OFF "Require Attention for Face ID" and "Attention-Aware Features" I am back to about 10 hours screen-on time from a 100% charge with my IPhone 13 Pro.

With "Require Attention for Face ID" and "Attention-Aware Features" ON, I could get at most 4-5 hours from a full charge.

I followed @nbpf :

…and I can confirm that for me disabling both works. For now I don’t know if it’s one or the other, but I went from having to charge twice a day (hardly using my phone at all) back to using only about 30% in 24 hours. On an iPhone 12 with 87% capacity. It should still be fixed of course, but for now it’s ok.

Today the battery on my iPhone 13 (90% capacity) dropped from 100% at 7am to less than 20% at noon and I have done nothing different from my usual day. Happened yesterday as well. IOS is 17.4.1. Noticed that the UNITED Widget was using 91% of my battery usage over the last 24 hours even though I didn't change any settings on it. I saw a "live" permission running so I turned that off but then decided to remove the entire widget. Waiting to see if it helps while charging my phone mid-day!

I would have to mirror that, though in low power save it is now actually workable. Still low power save automatically disables which is a problem.. (on another note, what an extremely inconvenient forum this is with posts moving, no search, no clear reply link, etc)

Thanks! According to Use Low Power Mode - Apple Support, "Low Power Mode" affects

  • 5G (except for video streaming) on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models
  • Auto-Lock (defaults to 30 seconds)
  • Display brightness
  • Display refresh rate (limited up to 60 Hz) on iPhone and iPad models with ProMotion display
  • Some visual effects
  • iCloud Photos (temporarily paused)
  • Automatic downloads
  • Email fetch
  • Background app refresh

With "Low Power Mode" off, I still notice too high levels of battery drain and overheating while just browsing web pages via a good Wi-Fi connection, low display brightness and "Background app refresh" set to off. Thus, the problem might have to do with the display refresh rate. Now trying with "Limit Frame Rate" on and "Low Power Mode" off.

And yes, working with discussions.apple.com is a pain and I think Apple knows it and wants it to be so!

Hello~ Just so you know…I am a volunteer trying to help others with their issues. I can’t fix your iPhone only helpfully and politely point you in the right direction. What model iPhone as you never mentioned that.? Does it have its original battery or has it been changed? If so by whom? Click on below and check the battery health? What is it?
