Setting icons are grey on my MacBook

Hi there,

My MacBook is showing grey icons and I am unable to access them. I also noticed that I have question marks on my dock that cannot be removed. Apps that I have deleted keep coming back. I am very confused and need assistance please?

All dock Icons are just question marks I have recently reset and deleted all the apps from my macbook Pro running ventura. now the dock shows question mark icons for apps that are no longer installed on the system. I have tried erasing the drive under disc utilities, reinstalling the OS, using the Erase all content and settings under general setting none of these options clear the icons. I am unable to drag them from the dock to remove them control clicking just gives a bubble that says options > with nothing to choose. Is there a way to fix this issue have tried everything that I can find on the internet none of the suggestions work.

Huge grey question marks on the Mac Dock Hey I just bought a MacBook Pro A1278 Core i5 2nd hand online, first experience with Mac products. None of the functions seems to be working. System preferences no, App Store no, Applications no. I googled for troubleshooting and got something like force quitting and opening in safe mode. I tried it and now no app icons on the dock, just huge grey question marks. Still no functions working. I can't open system preferences I can't open system update, applications nothing. Question marks are apps that cannot run on this Mac. Try and delete these apps via the applications folder instead of dragging them out of the dock to the recycle bin to see if this will help you removing the apps
