Any time I try to text an Android phone after updating to ios 17.4.1, I get a status bar that never completes and then an error message saying the text failed to send. Retries have the same result.

There appears to be a block on SMS delivery, potentially for the SIM that you use. Please check with your carrier to resolve this.
You need to have an SMS/MMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc. does not provide SMS/MMS services.

Apple to Apple uses wi-fi / Apple to Android uses Cellular data (if you have a plan)
Wondering if a setting may need turning off / on or to be changed:

Restarting iPhone often restores order if something is not working as expected (ie re-establishes connections)
Contact your cellular provider, it's a cellular carrier issue.
Kristin is correct. It's not the carrier. I've done so many network restarts and a factory reset. I even got a new E-sim card from my carrier. Still no better. I've had trouble since the update and just hung up with Apple tech support. They said that even though this update has been out for a few months, they just recently are aware of everyone being unable to send photos to Android users. They did not commit to a quick fix or work around but they asked that I be patient and hopefully they will fix the issues in a few days. I even heard that some folks lost their MMS button completely. Yikes!
Contact your cellular carrier. Those are carrier features.
It is an IOS issue. It has happened both to texts I’ve sent to an android phone (different carrier) and my husband’s iPhone (he has a 13 and I have a 14), and just this morning, I never received a text sent to me from my friend who also has an iPhone and we have different carriers.
If you didn't receive a message that was sent to you my an iPhone owner, that was an iMessage which is a different technology.
You may want to check your Do Not Disturb settings; your issues are not at all common.
No the carrier is not the issue. The issue is Apple. I have had the same issue. All was fine until the 17.4.1 update.
This is a cellular carrier issue.
Were it iOS, it would be broken for everyone and is most certainly is not.
Updated my phone to 17.4.1 yesterday and now cannot send texts to android phone numbers (not even to a single android number). Also am unable to use mobile roaming, as I’m getting messages about not having a SIM card. Restarting the phone enables roaming briefly but then it reverts to not working. Very frustrating!

Yes agree 100%..but my problem is only when I am using my Kenwood in car system.....I cannot text any android phone..either via in car (Kenwood) or via Siri since I updated IOS 17.4.1.. Come on Apple get yr act together and get out an update!
I too cannot send a text to an Android phone. Also, I can not get authorization codes from businesses sent to my iPhone via text message. I have talked to Verizon twice and Apple Support three times!!! Help, any suggestions. I have the IOS 17.4.1 update.
Baloney. You know it was the update. Carrier should have zero to do with this update issue
