Photo format issues IOS17.3.1 to High Sierra 10.13

Have been transferring photos from Iphone 6 to Macbook air with no trouble. Now with Iphone 12 mini the photos won't open:

The means of transfer don't affect the issue (airdrop, icloud, cable etc)

I've changed the image format from HEIC to JPEG and set transfer to 'most compatible' with no effect.

I've tried a different Iphone 12 with the same variety of settings with same result.

(oh, and images taken in WhatAapp come out with no problem, but a camera image sent over WhatsApp shows the same error)

I'm running IOS 17.3.1 to High Sierra 10.13.

Previously my phone photos would just appear in my mac library so this is ...... something of an irritant!

any ideas out there please.

High Sierra is pretty old in computer years compared to iOS 17! It's possible that macOS 10.13 doesn't work well with new formats. The error message is not saying that it can't get the picture to your Mac-- just that Photos won't recognize it.

Have you tried to use the app Image Capture to upload the pictures. You may need to close Photos, and then use Image Capture to load the pictures to a folder on your Mac. Then try looking at them with Quickview, Preview, or Photos.

An update: connected another iphone 12 and discovered that any image prior to 14th Jan2023 is read correctly. Any image taken after that time generates the 'cannot import data' error above.

Sounds update related.

any ideas please?
