How do I connect my Lexmark printer to my MacBook?

I purchased a MacBook a week ago now wanting to connect a Lexmark MS617dn to print. I am looking for detail for cable connection and to obtain a driver for the printer. I read the online instructions but they offer little assistance. Can you point to where I can find help?

Checking the Lexmark website, it would appear the latest driver for this printer is for MacOS Yosemite...hard to say if it would work with MacOS Sonoma. (I would suspect it doesn't)

Then checked the AirPrint list, but didn't see this model on it, so it's not going to run that way, either. About AirPrint - Apple Support. It doesn't appear to be a wireless printer, so not surprised it's not on that list.

Specs say it has USB 2.0, so a USB A cable would be what you need. To connect it to your new MacBook, you'll need a USB C to USB A adaptor. Apple has one, and you can also find them on Amazon.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

The specifications for the Lexmark MS617dn mention the following standard printer languages.

"PCL 5e Emulation, PCL 6 Emulation, Microsoft XPS (XML Paper Specification), Personal Printer Data Stream (PPDS), PostScript 3 Emulation, PDF 1.7 emulation, Direct Image"

You may want to check whether (built-in) generic PCL or postcript printer software in macOS can be used.

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

See, for example, the Use: option under Add a network printer by specifying its IP address:

"If Printer Software list doesn’t include your printer, try downloading and installing the printer software (also called a printer driver) from the printer manufacturer. You can also try choosing generic postscript or PCL printer software from the pop-up menu depending on your type of printer."

The MS617dn model has Ethernet in addition to USB. This means that you could connect the printer to a network (Wi-Fi router).

Addendum

An MS617dn is not mentioned in https://www.lexmark.com/content/dam/lexmark/documents/white-paper/y2022/Lexmark_UPD_1b_TWP_en.pdf , only the MS610 Series (with an MS610dn). However, the MS617dn is in fact listed as compatible under Mono Laser Printers in https://www.lexmark.com/en_us/support/universal-print-driver.html .

The Mac UPD mono driver package may or may not be of interest for your printer. It should be noted though that Mac UPD is for operating systems up to macOS 12 Monterey only. Any attempted use with the latest macOS versions would be entirely experimental.

As always, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before testing anything. Software conflicts cannot be ruled out.
