a notification with a grey key symbol has shown up on my iphone

I don't know what this is and don't want to click on it. I can't tell where it came from as it is not a text message or an email. I can read part of the message without opening it. It says:

The password for one of your accounts has appeared in a data leak, putting it at high risk of compromise. i...

Does anyone knows who sent this and if it is legitimate of some kind of hack.

Thank you

Thanks for replying but there wasn't enough information for me to understand what this key this is.

I ended up googling it and read a bunch of articles. I finally found one that actually explained how Apple stores saved passwords in my phone. I was not aware I had any saved passwords. By going to Settings>passwords I was able to figure it out and read about ones that Apple said had a security leak. Now I can change those passwords at the website or maybe even from the passwords section.

Although I have autofill passwords in the "on" position I don't have the keychain checked. There were 7 security recommendations for some passwords but some were not even current and hdd been changed long ago. Also I don't use icloud -- not sure that would make a difference.

Thanks for your help

It either came from the Keychain app on your iPhone that houses all the passwords that you have saved for various websites OR it came from one of the third-party password managing apps that you may be using. More than likely, it is from the Apple Keychain app. You can click and cancel it out.

You can click on it and see its recommendation to change the password where you may be using it.

Thank you. I appreciate you pointing out that there is a keychain app which I was unaware of and that passwords are stored in settings. I don't use a password managing app. I search for info on iphone keychain and passwords saved on my phone and found it in settings. I was unaware it was there. I think I've figured it out and can now change passwords that Apple recommended were at risk.

Not sure about canceling it out. It only shows on the screen of my iphone under the heading "Notification Center". When I held my finger on it it shows the whole message. I would have had no way of knowing it was legit and from Apple. Seems like a dumb way to let people know there is a problem. I'm still not sure it is from Apple. Why didn't Apple just send an email? I guess it will go away when I click on the clear button on the screen for all the notifications.

Also I have never received one of these notifications before. So would that mean the data leak just happened and that's why I'm being notified?

Thank you for replying and for the information you provided.
