Why does my MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) turn off its power port (Thunderbolt) when I close the lid?

Running Monterey. My MacBook Pro is killing its battery by driving it to ZERO charge with the lid down, even with the power line plugged in. If I open lid and unplug and then re-plug the power cord, the battery starts charging again and continues until I close the lid. . . .

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.7
