My iMac stopped responding to mouse clicks

My Mac stopped responding to mouse clicks. I can see the mouse icon on the screen , can move it around but when I click on anything it does not respond. Keypad input works though. I have restarted Mac a few times, used a wired Apple mouse, used a different Magic Mouse. Nothing worked. I’m using Mac Catalina version.

Similar problem - but clears on a cold boot, then recurs at some point next session.

Using a Logi MX Master as first choice - but get same result with an Apple magic mouse, both on bluetooth - when I find the Logi dongle, I'll try it on that.

iMac is running Sonora 14.4.1 - but I've had problem for at least three months.

Nothing shows up in diagnostics in normal mode - I'll try that next time it goes wrong ...
