why are old emails coming back to my trash folder?

I recently asked the community after update 17.3 why I was getting old text messages I had erased literally years ago re-populating in my messages. Now after I moved my Yahoo mail to the Apple Mail app, my trash folder is being re-populated with emails I had erased dating back to 2011? I was of the belief when I erased an email it was gone? How and why are emails from 2011 coming back? This is sketchy….

Disconnecting after Deleting:

  • When you delete an email on your iPhone's Mail app, it primarily removes it from the local storage on your device.
  • This action doesn't necessarily delete the email from the actual email server (like Gmail, Yahoo, etc.). Probably your device was not connected to the Internet at the time of deletion.

The Power of the Server:

  • Your email server acts as the central storage for all your emails.
  • If your iPhone isn't connected to the internet when you delete an email, the deletion command can't reach the server.
  • Consequently, the email remains untouched on the server, waiting to be downloaded again.

Reconnecting and Rediscovering:

  • Even if years pass, the emails you "deleted" offline reside safely on the server.
  • When you reconnect your iPhone and re-add the same email account, the Mail app fetches emails from the server.
  • This includes the emails you thought you deleted earlier, making them reappear on your device.

Remember:

  • This functionality depends on your email service provider's settings. Some might have options to automatically delete emails from the server after a certain period, even if you haven't deleted them from your device.
  • It's always a good idea to check your email provider's settings for email deletion behavior.
