I want to use sidecar with my MacBook Pro but I’m already using all of the USB C ports and I don’t want to use sidecar wirelessly as I’m not always on WiFi.
Is it possible to use the HDMI output of my MacBook Pro to the USB C of my iPad Pro?
I tried it with an HDMI-USB C cable and the MacBook didn’t see the iPad. Not sure if it’s a cable issue or if this isn’t possible for some reason?
You can buy a HDMI capture device and download its companion app to stream the HDMI signal from your Mac to your iPad. No wifi, no login, just plug and play.
I'm using the Genki Shadowcast 2 with Genki companion app. Orion display app also works. (These are in the iPad app store).
I'm limited to 1080p, but I'm pretty certain the 4K version will give you up to 3840x2160 resolution option. (Sadly, I don't think they give you iPad Pro native resolution 2732x2048.
The only downside is the dongle does not power your battery at the same time. But I think there are adapters to do this.

The data rates required to support full-motion video displays on cables are the fastest and most unrelenting signals output by your Mac. They are faster than drive data. To support that sort of INPUT, you need a purpose built device. Your MacBook Pro and your iPad are not built for that purpose, and will not be able to support those INPUT speeds.
But a purpose-built device is available to accept input at that speed -- A computer monitor or TV set with digital inputs.

Can it be done with a portable monitor? Assuming the monitor has a separate power supply.
Any monitor with a direct, dongle-less HDMI connection will work.
