I have recently restarted an Apple TV 3rd gen a1427 which has been boxed for several years. The unit powers up and there is an output on the HDMI. With a new battery in the remote the indicator light on the Apple TV flashes when the remote is used but the remote actions have no affect on the Apple TV. I'm presuming that the remote needs resyncing some how but how do I do this.

The Apple Remote (aluminum) [A1294] needs to be (re-)linked to the Apple TV box, as described here: If your Apple TV remote isn't working (2nd half of the page) - Apple Support - Internet Archive. Do both steps, the unlinking and then the linking — both using the buttons on the current remote.

Thanks for that info. I gave it try but unfortunately no luck. The Apple TV on boot up comes up with 'no network' screen initially. I'm wondering if I could get beyond that the unlink/link might happen.
It shouldn’t need network connectivity in order to link the Apple Remote (aluminum) A1294, as this uses IR only.
Later models Apple TV Remote are not compatible with the Apple TV (3rd generation).
Alternatively to Wi-Fi, you could connect using wired ethernet. That usually doesn’t need configuration, and will just connect.
I agree to all youve said. I did have ethernet connected and I have the aluminium remote as pictured. The screen that came up had a Home/Computer symbol link and a 'Settings' one. If only I could click on it.
The linking procedure only requires using the buttons on the remote. You do not need to go into Settings on the Apple TV box at this time.
