i have an old ipod nano 6 that needs to be restored, but when i plug it into my desktop (desktop-vpd2f41) itunes freezes up, and the desktop only recognizes it when i unplug it. also the ipod says “do not disconnect” on the screen.

Make sure iTunes is up to date. Try again.
Or you can restore your iPod nano with the newly released Apple Devices application.
If it is not resolved, there may be a hardware failure in the device.
