icloud , photos , and storage

my phone as a limit of 5GB , and it’s all used up.

i already deleted messages from icloud ((and if anyone is wondering , no , your messages on your iphone do not get deleted)) , and that freed up a bunch of space. but now my photos are the problem , taking up 4.36GB of the 5GB i have. i don’t know why the storage i had deleted filled up so quickly.

my main point is , i was wondering what happens if i press the “turn off and delete from icloud” button. do the photos i have in my photo gallery on my iphone get deleted ? i want to keep my photos , but i want to make space because that warning sign of low storage has been on the bottom of my “recents” area of my photo gallery for about two years ?

if anyone knows what happens if i press that button , i’d appreciate it so much if you reply and help 💞

Here's what Apple has to say about it.

How to turn off iCloud Photos - Apple Support

Note the cautions to

  • Make sure that you have all of your original photos and videos on your device before turning off iCloud Photos
  • Make a copy of your photos and videos (e.g., on a computer) before turning off iCloud Photos

One thing for certain – if you "turn off iCloud Photos in iCloud and all of your devices", you're not going to have the copies in iCloud to fall back upon if something were to happen to your phone.

Are you backing up your phone (manually or automatically)? I believe that once you turn off iCloud Photos, your backups may start including photos. (I say may because there's a setting to control whether they are included or not.). If you are doing regular backups, are doing them to iCloud, and are including photos in the backups, turning off iCloud Photos won't really decrease your overall iCloud storage usage. You'd just be robbing Peter (freeing up space dedicated to photos) to pay Paul (taking more space to store larger backups).

Another possibility would be to upgrade to iCloud+. For $0.99 per month (U.S. – pricing may vary elsewhere), you can increase your iCloud storage limit from 5 GB to 50 GB.
