Hello all! After a recent update to Safari 17.4 (17618.1.15.111.5, 17618), my aging late 2015 iMac (OS 12.7.4) is now sometimes rendering PDFs (especially longer ones) in Safari as a plain grey screen. I tried searching around, but most of the posts about this issue are ancient, and it is a new problem for me. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi again! I forgot to follow up here: Thanks to a post on Reddit, I found out that the Rakuten extension was the culprit! I have turned that off for now, and PDFs load again, large and small.

Agree. That was the issue on my system. I suggest turning off all extensions and see if things work again and then turn them on one at a time.
Thank you for the tip on extensions causing this problem -- I'm running Safari 17.5 and the culprit appears to be the Coupert extension.
Ooh, definitely a possibility (re: competing app), or just some random incompatibility nobody has bothered to catch. Have you tried disabling the Day One extension?
Yes. I'm having the same problem. Also, when the pdf just displays grey, cannot open it in Acrobat or download it, plus it freezes the website that produced it (for example my online banking trying to display a statement or Quickbooks Online when producing an invoice for a customer). Everything works just fine in Chrome.
I don't have the Rakuten extension installed. The only extension I have is for Day One (a legacy version) so there may be more than one culprit. I wonder if this is because DayOne also competes with an Apple App?

Update: Just updated to 17.4.1, and the problem is still here. I tried quitting and restarting Safari with the Shift key down, but that didn’t help either. Anyone out there having the same problem?
Yes, especially when I hit the back arrow to return to the previous page.
