Safari in my iMac with Monterey 12.6.7 has just started hanging all the time. I tried all the suggestions in a 2022 discussion and nothing works. It keeps opening with with a page asking me to select page to bookmark even if I hit cancel it still hangs.

You do have to quit Safari first, force quit if necessary. Starting Safari with the shift key held down disables any third-party extensions you may have installed and disables any tabs you may have had open.
Apparently I wasn't clear. If you have the problem again, force quit Safari, then start Safari with the shift key held down.
FWIW, if it happens again, start Safari with the shift key held down.
You won’t believe how many times I had to force quit. I even disabled the one extension that was on. I even tried disk utility which went through repair and found nothing wrong. The problem was very stubborn
Finally managed to get it to work. I have no idea how. I was able to reset start page and what new windows and tabs opened with and after that it worked.
I had already tried that several times, as well as starting up in safe mode several times, resetting pram. None of those worked.
I already said I did that multiple times.
