Opening links leads to “about:blank” page

Recently on my iPad and iPhone, clicking valid links in either my browser (Firefox) or e-mail (Outlook), a new tab will open to the “about:blank” page, and nothing more. I’ll have to close it and re-click the link, sometimes two or three times before it will work. Sometimes these are links I use all the time and which work fine on other computers (such as my desktop PC). I’ve read about the about:blank page, and while it is nothing to worry about per se, reaching it can indicate other problems, such as malware on the device. I’ve also read that an ad blocker might help, but I can’t find one for Firefox, only Safari (which I don’t like and don’t use).

I am using an iPad Pro 10.5 in., iOS 17.4.1, Firefox 124.0 (39709). Thanks for any help.

The behaviour that you described might suggest that your WiFi/Internet Router is caching DNS. You may find that a restart of your Router (clearing the DNS cache), followed by a restart of your iPad, will clear the problem….

To restart your router, disconnect power from the router for at least 30 seconds - then reconnect power to restart. After your router reboots (which may take several minutes), force restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

Now, I am not entirely sure why, because I also have this issue sometimes, but I think it has something to do with the contents of the page. Maybe it’s too crowded? Try restarting your device. If the problem persists, maybe try using different browsers, check the internet stability on your iPad, or use another device.

Hope this helps!
