macbook pro suddenly running very slow

Hi - my MacBook Pro which has always been incredibly reliable suddenly started running very slow earlier today. It appeared to happen after installing the latest whatsapp desktop app update but that may just be a coincidence.

Everything has been running slow most of the time since (3-4 second delay after clicking on items before action) but occasionally it returns too running at normal speed for a while.

There is plenty of memory available (335 gig free) and i have restarted 3-4 times.

Is there any programme I can run to identify the problem? Or any simple way of solving it?

thanks

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.2

—A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

unplug all non-essential peripherals when testing

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS
