Hello ! I would like to get a second external drive for my Mac Book Pro. I have a WD Ultra 2T that is about 4 years old. Any suggestions about an SSD vs conventional and your best experiences with a particular brand is appreciated !

A SSD will be faster and more reliable. Any name brand will work. Make sure you format it for your Mac using Disk Utility the first time you connect it.
There are many fine brands out there. My experience with LaCie drives has been good. I agree, you want to get an SSD drive, not a mechanical drive. Finally, many drives come with their own maintenance apps on them.They almost always cause problems. Best to delete them and only use Disk Utility for formatting, etc.
