Word on MacBook Air is unable to open different file formats

Word cannot open the file because the file format does not match the file extension.

Have you tried changing the extension to the format? Assuming this is Word for Mac, control-click on the file and select 'Get Info', then change the extension under 'Name and Extension'. Both DOC (.doc) and DOCX (.docx) extensions are standard for a Word document.
