I woke up to my SIM card not working and I’m stranded in another country what do I do

I got a pop up on my phone that said SIM card error and when I went to my cellular to fix it it said I had the set up my cellular. I already have had this phone for 4 years am on a Verizon plan now. I cannot call anyone and can only face time and text on wifi. I am also in a foreign country so I have no Verizon store near by. How do I re set up my cellular

What model of iPhone?

If its a physical sim card, try ejecting your sim card and re-insterting it.

click here ➜ Remove or switch the SIM card in your iPhone - Apple Support

If that does not work, try restarting your iPhone

click here ➜ Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If that does not work, and you are using an eSim, use your service provider's app to try to set up the eSim again.

If that still does not work, you will need to contact your service provider directly for more help. They should have an international number you can use. Check their website for details on how to contact them from abroad.

There are a few options you have besides getting a new SIM card from your current residence (which might not work if your phone is locked to a different carrier). Let's explore some solutions:

  • Unlocking your iPhone: If your iPhone is locked to a specific carrier, it will only work with SIM cards from that carrier. You can contact your current carrier to inquire about unlocking options. This would allow you to use a local SIM card when you travel.
  • Using a local SIM card: This is a popular option for travelers. When you arrive in your destination country, you can purchase a local SIM card from a carrier there. This will give you a new phone number for that country, and you'll be able to make calls, send texts, and use data on the local carrier's network. Be sure to research rates and data plans before you buy.
  • Using eSIM: Some newer iPhones support eSIM which is a digital SIM card. This allows you to download data plans from compatible carriers directly to your phone. You can contact your carrier or a local carrier in the destination country to see if they offer eSIM plans.
  • Using Wi-Fi: If you can find Wi-Fi hotspots, you can use Wi-Fi calling and messaging apps like iMessage and FaceTime to stay connected without using cellular data.

By considering these options, you can choose the best way to use your iPhone while traveling internationally.
