Unable to connect IPAD to wifi

I can and have connected my Iphone to my wifi with no problem. But, I just opened up an IPAD that has been sitting in the closet for about 1 year. I charged it and realized I needed to connect to the wifi. However, when i try to connect, it gives me the message Unable to connect. I know the password is correct so what else is causing this and how do I fix it

iPad, iOS 10

What iPad model and what protocol are you using for your 802.11 WiFi on your router. Older iPads do not support the new "ax" protocols found on newer routers. These routers usually have a fallback mode for compatibility with older devices.

If the security on your router is set to WPA3, then change it to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. If you do not have the Transitional setting, then you may need to use WPA2 - Personal.

Start with basic WiFi troubleshooting - as detailed here:

Consider that your Router, to which you are attempting to connect, may be configured to require support for security features that are not supported by older versions of iOS. If you have an older iPad and your router is configured for WPA3 or WPA3/WPA2 mixed authentication, you will need to change this to WPA2 PSK(AES). Newer models of iPad support WPA3.

You do not need to buy a data plan. You can either purchase a WiFi only iPad or WiFi + Cellular. Of course TMobile is only interested in selling you the Cellular iPad, since that one would need their monthly service. Check on the Apple website and you will see the prices for both models.

Yes, I would agree you need a newer iPad. You may be able to lower your Security Protocol on your router to allow the iPad to connect, but with the iPad 4th generation, it was discontinued 10 years ago and can only be updated to iOS 10. Even if you did connect to your WiFi, you would be severely limited on the apps you could use.

Well I guess that is my problem. This is an old 4th generation ipad. So I guess what you are telling me is that if I get a new ipad, i should be able to connect? While looking at the T mobile website, it indicates that you have to buy an ipad data plan? When I had AT&T internet, i was able to just connect to my home internet, and I really do not want to have to buy a data plan additional. Would appreciate your advice. I would be willing to buy a new ipad but not if I can't just connect it to my home internet. Thanks
