how to update my imac past mac os high sierra

i have an old imac that is perfectly fine, it just won't let me update it. it is in excellent condition, no memory issues, it was just off for a couple of years while i was taking care of my ailing mother, now it is obsolete......but honestly, if it I could get it updated with the current operating system, it has all that I really need. Can anyone help?
