Apple Maps "Documents and Data" Storage Issue

The Documents and Data for Apple Maps balloons to take up all available storage on my phone. It is now taking up 7.39GB. I only use Google Maps and have tried reinstalling and deleting Apple Maps, updating to iOS 17.4.1, restarting the phone, etc. Interestingly, even with the app deleted, Apple Maps increases the amount of data it uses by around 0.5GB/day.

I recently switched from Android/PC to all Apple products so I'm still getting used to the system, and I'd like to avoid factory resetting my phone if at all possible. It seems like multiple people are complaining about this issue online with no real solution. I'm curious if anyone knows of a way to fix it?

I have a phone with 128GB and i have run out of storage. When I go to the iPhone storage, the first app that is taking up the most space is apple Maps with 62.42GB. This is the amount even when I try to offload or delete it.

I have looked to try to find any offline maps and have found none.

Another forum suggested going to the Maps app setting and clicking "optimize storage" but I do not have that option when I go to the settings. I cannot figure out why it is taking up so much space and completely out of nowhere this happened. I might have clicked an apple maps link when the app was already deleted on my phone but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Also, check if you have stored offline Maps on your device.

Offline maps in Apple Maps are stored on your device's local storage and are independent of the app itself. Reinstalling the app won't affect these downloaded maps.

Here's a breakdown of why:

  • Apple Maps downloads specific areas you choose for offline use.
  • This downloaded data is stored on your device's memory.
  • Reinstalling the app only affects the app files, not your device's data storage where the maps reside.

However, it's always a good practice to double-check your downloaded maps after reinstalling any app. You can find them under the Offline Maps section within the Apple Maps app itself.
