I'm gone through several sets of wired speakers with my Mac mini, all of them lose connection from time to time, requiring me to unplug/re-plug to get them to wake up. Is this a known issue with the Mini, or are there some speakers that reliably work well with it?

Ah' sorry, you posted in the Mac mini section of the forum so I thought you had a Mac mini.

The audio output can switch from one to the other depending on various factors. Could be computer sleep as suggested, but I suspect that it has more to do with having multiple output options.
With that in mind, you should be able to direct the sound output to any of the available options, using the Sound icon on the right side of the menu bar.
Uncheck Wake, should fix.
What year model is your Mac mini...?

FWIW I have an old Creative Inspire T3030 that I used with my 2010, 2012, 2018 Intel Mac mini's, that now works fine plugged into my 2020 M1 Mac mini.
