Mail won't let me select just one email

Mail for Mac sometimes has this glitch. I attempt to select one email. But a whole load more are selected, so that it becomes impossible for me to view the one I wanted to select. Can anyone help?

Individual emails won't open I am unable to open up individual emails on my iMac. Everything is up to date as far as I know. I see the incoming emails, however when I click to open, nothing happens. I have to go to the bar at the top and choose view message and then it opens.
