14 Pro: Looking at screen prevents sleep

Not sure if this is a feature or a bug. On the iPhone 14 Pro I have the Auto-Lock set to 30 seconds.

  1. Unlock phone, place it on flat surface.
  2. The phone won't go to sleep while I'm looking at the screen, even from a few feet away.
  3. If I close my eyes, or look away from the screen, it goes to sleep after 30 seconds.

It appears that the Face ID scanner is monitoring whether I'm actively looking at the screen and keeps the phone awake until I stop actively looking at it. Is this a new feature or has it always behaved like that?

Yes, it's a feature. It's called "Attention Aware".
