iPad seems to ignore auto lock setting and dims at ~2 mins

I had my autolock setting on my iPad set to five minutes. But I’d be playing a game like Wordle, and thinking about the next word, while looking at the screen. I would notice the screen would dim unexpectedly, and it seemed like it had been less than five minutes. I used to stopwatch on my iPhone to check how long it had been and it said two minutes and five seconds. I tried changing the auto lock setting to 10 minutes on the iPad, but still noticed the same behaviour. I do have the iPad closer to my face than what is possible to do a Face ID, as I am pretty nearsighted, so I wonder if the iPad detect attention? Even so it’s not clear to me that it would cause the auto lock timer setting to be overridden. I am pretty sure I’ve also tried changing the autolock to never before, and it still does the same thing. It sounds like something else is triggering the screen to dim and go into mode for me to have to login again. This is pretty frustrating, and I am hoping there is a solution to it. this has persisted through iOS upgrades. I am on the latest version now, iOS 17.

As you have an iPad with FaceID, perhaps you have enabled (recommended - and by default) its "attention aware" feature.

Settings > FaceID & Password > Attention-Aware Features - set to ON or OFF as required

When enabled, if your iPad detects that your attention is not on the screen - or you are elsewhere - it will automatically dim the screen and then lock. This feature also reduces the volume of alerts and notifications while the iPad is being used - raising the volume, to attract attention, when you are not using your iPad.

When you are actively using your iPad, the screen should remain unlocked - until your attention is distracted, or you are not within the FaceID sensors field of view.
