Adobe Disappeared from MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro 16" 2021 running Sonoma 14.4.1 suddenly has no Adobe on it to open/read documents. PDF documents open in Text and are unreadable. How can I get the program that came with the laptop? (I was running Sonoma 14.2.1 this morning when the problem first was noticed; I didn't use the computer much the last couple of days, so it may have started sooner. I updated to 14.4.1 to see if it corrected it.) (Yes, I restarted the computer to see if it would correct itself, and it did not.)

I've downloaded Adobe Acrobat from their website--before updating the system--so with effort I can open PDFs, but it doesn't function well at all--what came built into the Mac was seamless; the current application is poorly functioning, clunky, time consuming, and frustrating. When printing, it changes the borders and has basically ruined many of the documents already created. How can I open PDFs without this new, difficult version of Adobe Acrobat that I had to download?

Help, please, in non-technical terms! (Spell it out, step by step. I am not technically savvy.)

It's possible the PDF documents are no longer set to open automatically in Preview (the default preinstalled PDF viewer). To change this, first a PDF (any PDF) on the computer, then hold the Control (^) key and click on it. Select 'Get Info', then scroll down until you see the section titled 'Open with:'. Click on the drop-down menu, then select 'Preview' from the list* and click 'Change All'. If Preview doesn't show up in the dropdown, choose 'Other', then scroll down the list of Applications that opens to find it.

Thank you so much. The one particular document continues to be a weird problem. I couldn't open it with Preview; Preview is grayed out and is not given as an option. I can, however, open it through my iPhone and send to print, but when I tried to save it to Dropbox, the result was the weird Text code. When I tried to save it to Books, it cut the top half of the document off, BUT I can view and print it when I open it from the email. For this particular document, that will suffice. Other PDFs I can open without any problem (so far as I can tell).

Please note: the document does say it's a PDF but the document itself has no period "." between the title and "pdf" (documentnamepdf), if that makes any difference, but when I viewed it in Adobe it said it was a PDF.

Because of your clear instructions, I was able to set my laptop back to opening all documents with Preview and deleted the newly downloaded Adobe. I'm where I need to be since I could print the document and will scan it once I get needed signatures.

I appreciate your help.

Of course, good luck.
