I set it to auto-lock after 5 minutes. I enabled "raise to activate".
I see that the iPhone turns on by itself when I take it, and turns off when I put it on the table.

Yes, the phone “knows” when you are looking at it. There’s a setting for it in Settings/Face ID & Passcode, called Attention Aware Features. It will also dim the screen when you aren’t looking at it, and lower the alert sound and ringer volumes when you are looking at it.
