I had a "security alert" pop up on my iphone telling me to change my passwords on various sites.

How do I know if this is legit? After closing the message without action, I don't see anything to indicate a problem. Is this malware?

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 17

Good instincts to be skeptical.

As was mentioned above, review the following list for any problem passwords:

Settings > Passwords > Security Recommendations

There have been (and continue to be) various breaches, and it’s pretty easy to get caught in one.

Even if the message is not legitimate — and this case likely is, as I got one of these a few days ago — the password review won’t harm and may well help your security.
