I completely agree wtih @jefferythefrog regarding that an SSD upgrade will provide more performance improvement than will a memory upgrade.

You can easily determine whether you need more memory by observing the memory graph & details within Activity Monitor after running your most memory intensive workloads for several days.

If the Memory Pressure graph within Activity Monitor is:

  • Red -- you need more memory for that workload
  • Yellow -- you are borderline on having enough memory for that workload
  • Green -- Generally you have more than enough memory for that workload as long as the "Swap" and "Compressed" memory values do not have a large GB value. If the "Swap" and "Compresed" memory values are in the GBs, then it may indicate your workload may require more memory if you are encountering performance issues once those values enter the GB range. Even then, closing other apps may help when performing a memory intensive task. Sometimes just closing an app will help the app clear out the memory just as restarting the computer from time to time can help with memory issues.

Even if you do need more memory, I would suggest just purchasing a single 8GB stick of RAM and mix it with one of the original 2GB sticks which would give you a total of 10GB of RAM which should be more than enough memory especially since you've been operating this laptop for over ten years with just 4GB of RAM. Why waste money if it is not needed.

A Crucial MX500 SSD would be a good option for an SSD as it is generally a good compromise on price & performance & reliability and it is known to be compatible with Macs. Just avoid the Crucial BX500 series SSD as that model is complete junk.
