Html files won't open on iMac

I have a lot of html files for my website and recently I have trouble opening them. Also they will not duplicate. I have tried to restore from an external hard drive and that sometimes works. I want to update some of them and us Text Edit, and other html editors but none seem to work.

Has anyone else had this problem and know what is wrong with the files?

If there’s not some explanation for the corruption, I’d likely just replace the storage. If there wasn’t or isn’t a power failure, or a hot disconnection, or a bad or flaky USB cable, or macOS crashed weird, or otherwise, or maybe some weird vendor-added storage support software doing who-knows-what, it’s gone.

SMART is good as far as it goes, but won’t show everything, and won’t show transient cable, or electronics, or power supply faults.

A flaky SSD or HDD storage device is a flaky device, and my time and my data and my focus are worth more to me than is an SSD or HDD device.
