To do this, follow these steps:
closing the cover is a REQUEST to enter sleep mode, NOT a guarantee. Your Mac may have been awake the whole time its cover was closed.
to test, select Sleep from the Apple menu, and see if your Mac really does sleep. if not, there are ways to investigate why it does not sleep.
Thank you for your feedback. After following the procedures, I discovered that no application is preventing sleep in the energy tab. However, in the CPU tab, I noticed that "WindowServer," "powerd," and "sharingd" are preventing the Mac from sleeping.

Then by definition, your Mac was NOT sleeping.
Your Mac is a battery-capable device. it was never intended to be a completely battery operated device. it is not an iPhone/
The simplest solution is to connect the power adapter. Your Mac will NEVER over-charge.
