Unable to pair Apple Watch post update.

I have the iPhone X and I am trying to pair it with a series 4 Apple Watch. It begins to pair but then the watch app tells me my Apple Watch needs an update. I let the watch update then it tells me the watch is unpairing. I have been trying to pair it but it keeps unpairing, this has been happening for hours now. My phone had newest iOS update and I tried factory resetting the watch but it’s no help.

The current watchOS version (10.X) requires iOS 17 or greater to pair.

The iPhone X is too old to support iOS 17 or the current watchOS version.
