How do I get email notifications instantly on my phone?

I had the same issue, and I could not understand why. I had all the notification settings as they should.

Then I found out that inside the notification settings of Mail, under advanced, the accounts are selected by default only with badges and not with alerts. I changed that, and now it works (sometimes it still delays, but not too much).

Go to Settings -> Mail -> Notifications -> Customize Notifications, and you can find your accounts with only "Badges" activated. Toggle "Alerts" too.

I don't know why Apple does not have the alerts active by default, expecially for emails. Being forced to go into "Customize Notifications" for such a basic feature is, to say the least, not intuitive.

notification settings are all on, same issue with me for years now. using gmail with mail app doesn't work. it doesn't push emails instantly. i receive them on my gmail app on iPhone and on MacBook but not on Mail app. Also, inside Background App Refresh - there is no 'Mail' app, I just saw this.

I followed your trail to and through customize notifications to find both badges and alerts already toggled on and the problem pesists.Notifications is already allowed in the mail app and when checking background app refresh I find that mail is not in the list in the background refresh section so I am unable to ascertain if it is turned on or off.On checking the app store for mail update I could not find the link to update the mail app.

Notifications for messages is working fine for every message.

I am having this issue as well, except with Outlook. I followed all the steps you suggested and nothing worked. I just added this account this weekend, worked perfect until Monday. I have the inbox at push notifications, backup refresh is on, redownloaded app, badges and alerts on. If it notifies me, I get a flurry of notifications when I open the Mail App. Sometimes it doesn’t. This is so frustrating that no one can figure this out. Apple doesn’t provide different options for different accounts on any other mail app, I have to use the Mail App.
