I made another test in my second user account, and set the primary language there to English.

Then let my Mac index my Shared iCloud Photos Library there with language set to English.

When I now searched for "monochrome" Photos offered "Monochrome photography" as a search result and showed me my old B&W scans, but also many photos I had edited for a split toning effect or sepia effect:

The result also included B&W Videos and Live Photos, also B&W photos with color brushed in, like this:

In the most recent version of Photos on Sonoma I can search for "Schwarz-Weiß" and Photos offers me a search result for "Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie" ( the German synonym for Black&White photography ). Photos has indexed my Photos Library in German, so I cannot test, if a similar search term will work in English.

The search result is showing all photos that are looking like Black& white photos, not necessarily only photos taken as Black&White, for example:

In my System Library I have lots of scans of old photo albums that I'm sure I set to Black & White, and they certainly look Black & White, but the only picture returned with a search of Black&White (with or without spaces) was an iPhone picture of a printed page with some blue handwriting on it. This is Ventura.

I'm curious how it knows if it's black & white-- the RGB Levels curve on all these old photo album pictures sure looks monochrome. Sepia toned Photos are monochrome, but not black & white-- and the RGB Levels show that -- they are identical but separate.
