How do I fix a storage issue on my iPhone 14 Pro?

I have an iPhone 14 with 256GB. I had 156GB used until a couple of weeks ago. I tried to copy GoPro pics (14GB) into Photos which somehow duplicated. They went to iCloud and then I'm not sure what....but suddenly I'm getting "Storage Full". I deleted the GoPro app and turned off iCloud. But something still a problem. I can't get back to the 156GB and don't know what I did or now to fix?

Then go to Settings ➜ General ➜ iPhone Storage and see what is using it up.

Is there a way to have the pictures stored in iCloud but not on my

No. As mentioned iCloud is a sync service, not an off device storage solution. Everything on iCloud gets synced to the iPhone.

Thank you. I was able to change the setting to optimize and I have freed up the space. That solved the issue. However, I was told by Apple that I could plug an external drive directly into the iPhone and copy the photos to the external drive, but this does not seem to work. Any idea about that?

How are you plugging it in exactly?

You would need an adapter to connect the external drive, and once it appears in the files app, you can then export photos from the Photos App to it by selecting them in the Photos and app and then tapping on the "Move to Files" option in the Share menu.

From there, navigate to the external drive to copy the files to it.
