There are time limits for extending
You have a limited 60 days to purchase Apple Care+ after a new purchase...
If you have AppleCare+ it will cover a large portion of accidental damage.
AppleCare Products - Mac - Apple
Purchase the new coverage within 30 days after your original Applecare+ coverage ends.
Extend your AppleCare+ coverage
