Brightness symbol appears in the centre of the iMac screen and will not go away

Try to startup in Safe mode then normal boot could solve your issue.

Thanks for the tip. Tried your suggestion but no luck. Had another suggestion that the brightness keys on the keyboard were sticking. Fiddled with the keys and problem solved.

What keyboard are you using..?
Sounds like you may have a stuck brightness key on your keyboard.
Played around with the keys and after a bit a constant pressing things resolved themselves.
