Nikon D5600 to MacBook Air M2

Hello everyone,

I'm a new MacBook user and I'd like to learn how to transfer pictures from my Nikon D5600 to my MacBook Air M2. Can someone please tell me which cable should I buy to connect them?

Thanks in advance!

The Nikon D5600 has a USB connector, which the user manual (page 20) identifies as "Hi-Speed USB with Micro-USB connector." From that description, and the illustration on page 4, it seems to be a Micro USB 2.0 connector, not the wider, crimped Micro USB 3.0 connector you may be familiar with from portable hard drives.

So a cable like this one might do:

You would want to be sure to get a cable that supports USB 2.0 data transfers (not just charging).

Another way of importing photos is with a card reader. Many photographers do things this way. The procedure is:

  • Turn the camera off.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera and transfer it to the computer's memory card reader.
  • Import the photos and videos.
  • Eject the memory card and transfer it back to the camera.
  • Once you're sure the photos and videos are safely copied, and backed up, you can reformat the memory card in the camera.

There are a lot of card readers that accept SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. Some are built into USB-C or Thunderbolt hubs. Others are little standalone gadgets like this one, which appear to have both USB-C and USB-A plugs (you use one at a time) and to be only slightly larger than a USB flash drive.

Look for a USB-C plug, USB 3.0 speeds, and SDXC card compatibility. There are probably still USB 2.0 card readers floating around, but there's little incentive to go with them if you can get USB 3.0 readers cheap.
