Key Repeat No Longer Functioning

At some point during the recent past, key repeat has stopped working. When I hold down any key, instead of the key repeating, a bubble appears over the cursor which appears to contain the unicode character options for that letter, if any are available. Letters that do not have optional unicode characters show nothing.

For the above, I am holding down the "O" key.

I checked my Key Repeat settings and nothing appears to have changed:

Any ideas what could be causing this?

That is how every Mac made in the last 10 years or so is normally supposed to work. Apple's info is at

You can remove this feature by following the Terminal app instructions in this note, but change the true to false

Just to clarify further, key repeat has long been disabled by default for letters and numbers. But there have always been other, symbol keys where key repeat should normally work: !@#$%^&*()_+<>? etc. Do let us know if they are not working for you.

As you have very correctly mentioned regarding other Non Number and Letters

///////////////// @@@@@@@@@@@@@ and others do work with a continuous holding of said key

Great work there once again

That's definitely not normal. Perhaps you have a 3rd party utility installed (antivirus stuff?) which is interfering?

But, as posted earlier, key repeat has been disabled by default in favor of the accent menu in Mac OS for many years now, and users who want it need to execute a terminal command.

Do you then get the key repeat on press and hold that hinder90 wants?

Let me try what I am understanding from your have, right here

o Single Click and continue to hold o - Unicode Pop up remains statically appearing

o single click and hold >> Unicode appears >> Single Click o again and yes do get double o o

Do I have this right ? 😎

I have been using MacOS since 2004 and I admit this is the first time I have seen this behavior. But what's more, the behavio of holding down a key varies between the option bubble and repeating the character according to no discernible pattern that I can identify. I don't make any changes to any settings, but at some point key repeat will return for some unknown reason. However, the next time I log on the hold behavior goes back to the option bubble.

As has been already been suggested

MacOS 14.3.1 was released Feb 8, 2024

macOS 14.4 released Mar 7, 2024

macOS 14.4.1 released Mar 25, 2024

As for keyboard and unicode Pop Ups

Holding the letter o key will present the Unicode Pop up

To get rid of the pop up for me, I tap the letter o a second time and presto the Pop disappears

I don't think so. What hinder90 wants is to press and hold o and get a string of them that keeps going until he releases the key. Like you get when you do press and hold on @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Ah, the lights are going on here

Just tried before replying

Nope do not get the repeated o by continuously holding o
