How sync/transfer Apple Books outside the ecosystem?

I am going to purchase an E-book reader (Pocketbook) as I think my iPad is getting too heavy to read on. I have so many books on Apple Books that I’ve purchased and my question is: Is it possible to sync or transfer the books from my Mac Mini to an ebook reader? Is possible to download them on my computer and transfer them or is this DRM protected or just plain illegal? I know there is a Pocketbook app which supports their own cloud but I haven’t looked into how this works.
