Lightning EarPods with USB-C adapter no working on iPhone 15 Pro

Headline says it all.

Adapter works for charging but...?

I know there are cable and adapter issues connecting to AirPlay but this is weird.

Am I missing something? I shouldn't expect the EarPods to work through an adapter?
