Smart playlist: top played artist - how to?

How do i create a smart playlist that shows the most played artists?

I can only get iTunes to filter based on tracks. But what if i wanted to see the most played albums or artists as whole, not the individual tracks?

Like a top albums or artists chart.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iTunes 9.2.1

That is how Smart Playlists work. They simply filter one track at a time by the rules you write. They do not have a way to look across tracks, such as to count up by Artist. It is a common complaint, but alas, that is how it works.

If you want to make a suggestion to Apple, you can do so at the iTunes Feedback page.

Yes, you might as well make the suggestion.

If you just want to do stats on your play history, you can paste your library display into a spreadsheet, and use the filter, sort, and count functions. The results will be fascinating, but of course they will not automatically create an iTunes playlist.
